Gelco Crown Repair: The Austin Owner’s Guide
A Gelco chimney crown repair in Austin typically runs $450 to $900 installed, depending on how much of the existing crown is salvageable and whether we’re doing a full recast or a sealing repair. We stock Gelco-compatible crown materials on our trucks, so most jobs are one visit, no waiting on a backordered part. You usually discover the crown has failed because water starts showing up where it shouldn’t: a damp patch on the ceiling near the flue, efflorescence staining on the brick, or bits of mortar on the hearth after a hard rain.
The crown is the concrete slab that caps the top of the chimney. On Gelco installations it’s specified as part of a matched chase-top and crown system, and it takes the worst of what Texas weather throws at a structure that can’t move out of the way. When it goes, it goes slowly at first, then all at once. We’ll walk you through exactly what we found, with photos, before any work begins.
Which Gelco Models This Applies To
We repair and replace crowns on the full range of Gelco chase covers, chase tops, and multi-flue cap systems, including the standard single-flue and multi-flue crown profiles Gelco manufactures for both masonry and factory-built chases. The compatibility question matters more than most homeowners expect. Gelco crowns are cut to standard flue tile outside diameters, 8-inch, 13-inch, and 18-inch being the most common here in Austin, but the chase dimension drives the overhang, and that’s where off-the-shelf parts go wrong.
Here’s the gotcha we see weekly: a homeowner buys a “universal” crown or cap from a big-box store, it doesn’t clear the chase by the 2 inches a proper Gelco crown does, and water runs straight down the brick face instead of shedding off. Gelco crowns are sized for a minimum 2-inch overhang with a drip edge. That spec exists for a reason. Austin’s freeze-thaw cycles work water into any gap, and an undersized overhang is a leak waiting for January. If you’re not sure what you have, look for the Gelco stamp on the underside of the crown or the chase cover, or measure the outside flue diameter and the chase dimensions. Send us a photo and we’ll identify it before we even schedule.
We install genuine Gelco replacement crowns and quality equivalents built to the same chase and flue spec. For most Austin homes, the genuine part is within $40 to $80 of a good aftermarket equivalent, and we’ll give you both numbers with the recommendation and the reason behind it. No upselling, just math and material science.

Signs Your Gelco Crown Repair Is Failing
- Water staining on the ceiling near the chimney. The crown’s job is to shed water before it gets into the chase or the masonry. A hairline crack that opens and closes with temperature swings lets water track down the flue or the chase interior, and it shows up inside before you see anything outside.
- Efflorescence, the white chalky deposits on the brick below the crown. That’s dissolved minerals wicking out of the masonry after water carried them through. It means water is moving through material it shouldn’t be. The stain isn’t the problem; the crack or failed joint above it is.
- Chunks of crown material on the roof, in the gutter, or on the ground after a storm. Austin’s summer sun bakes crown concrete until it spalls, the surface breaks away in flakes and chips. Once it starts, the exposed aggregate holds more water, and the cycle accelerates. A crown that’s spalling is structurally failing, not cosmetically aging.
- A visible crack wider than a hairline, especially if it runs across the crown rather than along the flue joint. Transverse cracks are load failures. The crown is fighting the flue tile, the chase, or its own internal reinforcement, and it’s losing. Sealing the surface won’t stop a crown that’s cracking through its cross-section.
- Your damper is rusting or seizing even though you never leave it open in the rain. Water entering through a failed crown follows the flue and pools at the damper plate or the smoke shelf. Rust down there means water up top, and in an Austin summer, that rust will lock your damper shut by fall.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
An installed Gelco crown replacement in Austin runs $450 to $900, and what drives the spread is material labor more than parts markup. A simple recast on a small single-flue crown at $450 means we form and pour a new crown in place, matched to your chase dimensions with the proper Gelco-spec overhang and drip edge. A large multi-flue crown with deep spalling that requires full demolition, disposal, formwork, and a pour with reinforcement runs toward $900.
Here’s what every job includes, and it’s always in writing before we touch a thing: the exact price, which parts, the material spec, and how long the work takes. Our written guarantee covers the repair for 365 days under the Done Right Promise. If it fails within that year, the second visit is free. No exception pages, no fine-print wriggle room. Ruben Castellano signs off on every written price personally, because he’s the one who has to stand behind it.
We also inspect the chase cover, flashing, and top courses of brick while we’re up there, because a crown replacement is the one time you have eyes on everything that protects the top of your chimney. If we find something, you’ll see photos of it and get a straight recommendation. If the flashing is fine, we’ll tell you it’s fine. We don’t invent work to fill a quote.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check a few things from the ground: look for visible cracks in the crown with binoculars, check for spalled chips in the gutter below the chimney, and watch for water stains inside after heavy rain. That’s useful information, and it helps us quote accurately before we arrive. What you shouldn’t do is get on the roof and attempt a crown recast yourself.
Working on a chimney crown means working at height on a sloped surface, often near power lines or in a position where the flue is below your feet. That’s a fall hazard before it’s a masonry project. Crown work also has to be formed, mixed, and cured at specific temperatures and slopes to shed water correctly. A bad pour that looks fine in March will crack in November, and you’ll pay twice. We carry the right Gelco-spec materials, the right forms, and the right fall protection. Call us at (361) 420-8585 and we’ll get a technician to you, by name and photo before arrival, with a written price before any work starts.
FAQs
Expect 15 to 25 years from a properly poured and cured Gelco crown in Central Texas, with the lower end for full-sun exposures on the west side and the higher end for shaded chases. Regular inspection catches hairline cracks before they widen, and sealing every 3 to 5 years extends the crown’s life meaningfully. Call (361) 420-8585 if you want us to take a look at yours before the next rain season.
Yes, if the crack is hairline and hasn’t blown out into spalling, we can route and seal it with a flexible crown sealant that moves with Austin’s temperature swings. If the crown is spalling or the crack runs through its cross-section, sealing it is a temporary bandage, and we’ll tell you that plainly. Either way, you’ll get a written price and a straight answer before you decide. Call (361) 420-8585 for an honest assessment.
Most single-flue crown replacements in Austin are done in 3 to 4 hours on site, plus curing time before the next weather exposure. Multi-flue chases can run a full day. We’ll schedule around the forecast so the pour sets properly, and we’ll give you the time window in writing before we book. Call (361) 420-8585 and we’ll work around your week.
Yes, our trucks carry Gelco-compatible crown materials, forms, and sealants for the most common Austin chase and flue configurations, plus access to the full Gelco catalog for uncommon sizes. DuraFlex and HeatShield parts for liner work are also stocked on the truck. Call (361) 420-8585 and we’ll confirm the part match for your specific chimney before we arrive.
