Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
DuraFlex Chimney Cap Installation: The Austin Owner’s Guide
A DuraFlex chimney cap installation in Austin typically runs $385 to $640 installed, depending on which cap series your liner uses and how tall the flue sits. We stock DuraFlex cap assemblies on our trucks, so most swaps happen in a single visit. Most Austin homeowners discover the problem the same way: they spot rust streaks running down the chimney chase, hear rain dripping into the firebox during a storm, or find a cap blown into the yard after a Hill Country wind gust.
If your cap has rusted through, pulled loose, or started letting water into the DuraFlex liner below it, replacing it now costs less than the liner damage you’ll be quoted for in a year or two. We install DuraFlex caps and matching components daily across Austin, from the older chimneys in Hyde Park to newer builds in Steiner Ranch.
Which DuraFlex Models This Applies To
DuraFlex liner systems ship with either a standard top plate and cap or a deluxe version depending on the kit. The critical detail we see Austin homeowners miss is that the cap has to match the liner diameter exactly. A DuraFlex 6-inch round liner needs a cap built for a 6-inch flue collar. Adapters exist, but an oversized cap on an undersized collar means gaps where rain and embers get through, and an undersized cap means someone has crimped and bent the collar to make it fit.
Write down the liner diameter printed on the label near the top of the liner if you can see it. If not, measure the inside diameter of the flue tile or the outside diameter of the liner itself. DuraFlex caps come in stainless steel, and we recommend staying with stainless rather than a galvanized aftermarket cap that will rust through in three to five Central Texas seasons. The cap is not a part to cheap out on when it is protecting a liner the rest of your system depends on.
We are an independent Austin chimney service, not affiliated with DuraFlex, but we install their components every week and keep common cap sizes on the truck along with matching storm collars and spark arrestor screens.

Signs Your DuraFlex Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
- Rust bleeding down the chase. The cap’s outer shell or the storm collar has started corroding, and every rain washes oxide stains onto the siding or stone below. Stainless should not rust, so if you see this, you’re looking at either a galvanized cap or a stainless cap that has been contaminated.
- Water in the firebox after storms. The cap has shifted, the damper is open, or the collar seal has failed. Water pooling in a firebox is the first step toward a liner that rusts from the inside out.
- You hear the cap rattling in high wind. Central Texas spring winds routinely hit 40 mph around the Hill Country, and a loose cap slaps against the flue tile. That repeated motion loosens mortar joints and cracks tiles.
- Birds or squirrels in the flue. A damaged spark arrestor screen means a nest is already inside, blocking airflow and creating a carbon monoxide risk when the fireplace runs. We pull nesting material out of Austin chimneys between February and May more than any other time of year.
- The cap itself is missing. This happens more than you’d think in the storm corridors east of MoPac. If the cap is gone, the liner is now an open pipe taking rain, leaves, and ember sparks directly into the flue.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For a standard single-flue DuraFlex cap installation in Austin, budget between $385 and $640 including labor, materials, sealant, and clean-up. The range depends on the cap size, roof access difficulty, and whether the storm collar or top plate also needs replacement, which it does about a third of the time. A cap on a two-story steep-pitch roof in Northwest Hills costs more than one on a single-story ranch in Pflugerville because of ladder work and time on the roof.
Every quote includes the same inclusions: the correct DuraFlex cap, a new storm collar if the existing one is compromised, high-temperature silicone sealant, and a quick visual check of the top of the liner while we’re up there. You receive a written price before any work begins, and the install carries our standard written guarantee. If the cap fails or comes loose within a year, the second visit is free. That’s our 365-Day Done Right Promise, and it’s in writing on every job, not optional.
DIY or Call Us?
You can check the cap visually from the ground with binoculars: look for rust streaks, obvious gaps around the base, or a screen that’s missing chunk. That five-minute check is worth doing before every winter and after every severe storm season here along the Balcones Fault line.
What you should not do is work on a chimney cap yourself on an Austin roof. Steep pitches are common in the hills west of the city, wet shingles are unforgiving, and the moment you’re on a ladder you’re managing a cap, a drill, sealant, and your own balance. We regularly get called after a Saturday project turned into a torn-up cap or a damaged flue tile. A cap replacement is a one-trip job for a technician with the right ladder and a harness, and the cost doesn’t change whether we’re cleaning up after a failed attempt or doing it right the first time. Call (361) 420-8585 and we’ll check your cap from the ground before we ever put boots on the roof.
FAQs
A stainless steel DuraFlex cap typically lasts 12 to 18 years in Central Texas before the spark arrestor screen or the storm collar starts to show real wear, though a galvanized cap will start rusting through in as little as five. The sun, hail, and dramatic temperature swings we get in Austin beat on rooftop metal harder than most parts of the country. Call (361) 420-8585 if you want us to check the cap you have and tell you how much life is left in it.
A detached spark arrestor screen can sometimes be reattached if the frame is straight and rust-free, but a cap that has rusted through or lost its structural integrity should be replaced, not patched. Any repair that leaves a gap at the flue collar defeats the entire purpose of the cap. Ruben Castellano and the Alcott Chimney Austin crew will show you a photo of the damage before you make the call, so you’re deciding with your eyes, not just our word.
Most single-flue cap installations in Austin take between 45 minutes and an hour and a half on site, including set-up, the install itself, and sealing the storm collar. Roof pitch and chimney height are the variables, plus any liner inspection that needs to happen while we’re up there. We’ll include that time in the written quote before work starts.
We stock the most common DuraFlex cap sizes on the truck, including 6-inch and 8-inch round stainless, with larger sizes available within a few days. If your cap lands outside the standard range, we’ll have the exact match shipped from our supplier and schedule the install the week it arrives. A phone call to (361) 420-8585 gets you an answer on your specific liner size before you commit to anything.
When your cap is shot, the liner it’s protecting becomes the most expensive thing you’ll ignore. Tell me what you’re seeing up there, and I’ll tell you what it actually means. Call (361) 420-8585 for a free estimate, and we’ll have a background-checked, identity-verified technician out to take a look. You’ll know the technician’s name and see their photo before we arrive, and you’ll have a written price before any work begins.
