Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Gelco Chimney Cap Installation: The Austin Owner’s Guide
If you have a Gelco chimney cap that’s rusted through, blown loose in a storm, or never seated right from the start, we can match the replacement to your existing Gelco model and have it installed usually within a few days of your call. A Gelco chimney cap installation in Austin typically runs between $185 and $450 installed, depending on your flue size, roof access, and whether the old mounting bracket needs replacing too. Most owners discover the problem the hard way: water stains on the ceiling near the fireplace, a cap lying in the yard after a Texas thunderstorm, or birds nesting inside the flue because the mesh finally gave out.
We’re an independent Austin chimney service, not a Gelco dealer or warranty center. That distinction matters because it means we’ll tell you honestly when a repair beats a replacement, and when the old cap is beyond saving. Ruben Castellano and our crew have been working with Gelco caps long enough to know which models hold up in Texas weather and which ones were never built for our hail, heat, and humidity swings.
Which Gelco Models This Applies To
Gelco makes a few distinct chimney cap lines, and the model number dictates what we bring on the truck. Most Austin homes we service have either the Gelco Standard Series (single-flue, galvanized or stainless) or the Gelco Deluxe Series (wider mesh, stronger lid). The standard models cover flue tiles from 8″ x 8″ up to 13″ x 13″, while the deluxe caps run larger, up to 17″ x 17″. The critical measurement isn’t the cap itself; it’s the outside dimensions of your flue tile plus at least an inch and a half of overlap on each side.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha: Gelco caps mount with either a pressure-screw system or a slide-on bracket, and the two are not interchangeable. Older Gelco installations from the 1990s and early 2000s often used the slide-on style, which has since been discontinued. If yours is a slide-on, we typically replace the whole assembly with the current pressure-screw equivalent rather than trying to fabricate a hybrid. The OEM-vs-aftermarket decision comes down to this: on a standard single-flue cap, a quality aftermarket stainless replacement often matches Gelco’s specs at $30 to $50 less. On multi-flue or custom-trimmed caps, we recommend staying with Gelco OEM parts because the corner welds and mesh gauge are hard to match.

Signs Your Gelco Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
- Water inside the firebox after rain. The cap’s lid has rusted through or shifted off-center, letting rain run straight down the flue. In Austin, our spring storms are the usual trigger for this discovery.
- Rust stains below the cap or streaking down the chimney crown. Galvanized Gelco caps have a finite life in Central Texas humidity; once the zinc coating fails, the steel underneath corrodes fast.
- Birds, bats, or squirrels getting in. The mesh side panels have separated from the frame or been torn open. Eastern chimney swifts are a common Austin pest once the mesh fails.
- The cap is loose or rattling in windy conditions. The pressure screws have backed out over years of thermal expansion. Left alone, the whole cap can lift off in a gust and become a projectile.
- Smoke backing up into the house on windy days. A damaged cap can actually restrict airflow instead of protecting it, especially if a dented lid is sitting too low over the flue opening.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For a standard single-flue Gelco-compatible cap installed on a single-story Austin home with easy roof access, you’re looking at $185 to $265. A two-story roof or steep pitch pushes that to $300 to $400. Multi-flue Gelco replacements run $350 to $450 because of the larger material and more involved mounting. The part itself is usually $60 to $180 of that total; the rest is labor, roof safety setup, and disposal of the old cap.
Every quote we give includes a written price before we touch the roof, and that price covers the cap, the installation, sealing of the mounting hardware, and a full inspection of the exposed flue tile while we’re up there. The work carries our written guarantee: if anything fails within 365 days due to our installation or a defect in the part we supplied, we return and make it right at no charge. You’ll also get the technician’s name and photo sent to you before we arrive, as part of the Threshold Standard we require on every job.
DIY or Call Us?
If you’re comfortable on a ladder and you just need to confirm the model number, you can check the underside of the cap for the stamped Gelco label. You can also safely clear leaves off a cap that sits below shoulder height on a one-story roof with a gentle pitch. That’s about where the safe DIY territory ends.
A chimney cap installation means working on a roof, usually at height, often on a slope, and almost always at the edge. Falls from one-story roofs are more common than most people assume, and Austin’s combination of steep pitches in older neighborhoods like Hyde Park and slick tile roofs in newer subdivisions makes it riskier than it looks. If you’ve got rust, water entry, or a loose cap, call us. We’ll come out, put eyes on it, and give you a fixed number. You can reach us at (361) 420-8585 for an assessment.
FAQs
A galvanized Gelco cap in Central Texas weather typically lasts 8 to 12 years before rust becomes a problem; the stainless versions regularly go 15 to 20 years. Austin’s humidity and our periodic hail storms are the two biggest lifespan killers we see. If you’re near the 10-year mark and notice flaking or pinhole rust, it’s cheaper to replace the cap than to repair water damage inside the chimney later. Call (361) 420-8585 and we’ll give you an honest read on whether yours has life left.
Sometimes the mesh can be re-crimped or a bent lid straightened, but once the structural welds fail or the mounting band cracks, replacement is the only fix that will hold. Patching a rusted cap with spray sealant or metal tape is temporary at best; it will fail again within a season or two. We’ll tell you plainly if yours is repairable, because we’d rather do a $40 fix than sell you a part you don’t need. Call us for an honest assessment.
A standard single-flue replacement on a one-story Austin home takes about 45 to 90 minutes once we’re on the roof. Setup, safety anchoring, and the post-installation flue inspection add another 20 to 30 minutes on site. Most customers are back to normal same day with no mess left behind.
We keep the most common Gelco-compatible sizes for single-flue chimneys on our service vehicles, along with mounting hardware and sealant. If you’re on a standard 8″ x 8″, 9″ x 13″, or 13″ x 13″ flue, there’s a good chance we can complete the replacement on the first visit. For larger or custom sizes, we order and return within a few days. We also work with DuraFlex and HeatShield parts when the job expands beyond the cap itself.
