Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

DuraFlex Damper Repair: The Austin Owner’s Guide

If you have a DuraFlex chimney liner with a damper that won’t open, won’t close, or hangs halfway, we stock the repair parts on our trucks and typically complete the job in one visit for $220 to $480 installed, depending on what’s actually failed. Most Austin homeowners discover the problem in October or November, the first time they reach for the damper handle after eight months of disuse and it either fights back or doesn’t move at all. Sometimes the cable has snapped inside the sleeve; sometimes the cast frame has warped from repeated heat cycling. Either way, Ruben Castellano and our crew have been sorting out DuraFlex damper failures across Austin since long before the current wave of new construction started putting fireplaces in every third house.

Which DuraFlex Models This Applies To

DuraFlex makes a few different damper configurations, and the repair path depends on what you have. The two we see most often in Austin are the DuraFlex Top-Sealing Damper (mounted at the flue crown, opened and closed by a cable that runs down through the firebox) and the DuraFlex Throat Damper (the traditional cast-iron plate just above the firebox, often paired with a DuraFlex stainless liner). The top-sealing version is the one that fails more often, because the cable mechanism lives outside in Central Texas heat and humidity year-round, where it rusts, binds, or snaps at the handle bracket.

If you’re not sure which one you have, look for a metal tag on the damper frame or check the cable path: a top-sealing damper has a visible cable running up through the flue, while a throat damper has a lever or chain at the firebox opening. OEM DuraFlex parts are well-made and worth the money when the failure is in the cast or stainless components. But for cable and handle assemblies, quality aftermarket replacements from brands like Copperfield or Famco often match or exceed the original spec at a lower price, and we’re upfront about which we’d put in our own house. You don’t need a new liner just because the damper failed; a lot of companies will sell you a $4,000 relining job when all you needed was a $40 cable kit and a competent installer. We’ll show you the part before we replace it.

Signs Your DuraFlex Damper Repair Is Failing

  • The handle goes slack or spins freely. The cable has snapped or detached from the damper plate. You’ll feel no resistance at all, and the damper won’t move no matter how many times you turn or pull.
  • The handle is hard to move, or grinds. Rust and creosote have accumulated inside the cable sleeve or around the pivot points. Forcing it usually makes the problem worse, and sometimes snaps the cable entirely.
  • You can feel cold air dropping into the firebox in summer. A top-sealing damper that won’t fully close lets conditioned air escape up the flue and outdoor air fall back in. Your fireplace shouldn’t feel like an open window in August.
  • You smell smoke or ash when the fireplace isn’t in use. A stuck-open damper lets chimney odors drift into the living room, especially on humid Austin mornings or windy days when the stack effect reverses.
  • Visible rust or pitting on the damper plate or frame. Once the cast iron starts scaling, it won’t seat properly even if the cable still works. You’ll notice gaps around the edges where the plate should sit flush.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For a DuraFlex damper repair in Austin, here’s what we charge and what drives the final number.

  • Cable and handle replacement: $220 to $340 installed, including the part. This is the most common repair and usually takes under an hour.
  • Full top-sealing damper replacement (OEM DuraFlex): $380 to $480 installed, depending on flue size. This includes removing the old unit, fitting the new damper at the crown, and testing the cable tension and seal.
  • Throat damper plate repair or replacement: $260 to $400 installed, depending on whether we’re rebuilding the pivot points or replacing the plate itself.

The range mostly comes down to flue size and how much of the old hardware can be salvaged. Every quote is written down before we start, and it includes the part, labor, and our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the repair fails within a year, the second visit is free. We also carry DuraFlex-compatible parts from Copperfield and Famco where they’re the better fit. We’ll never quote you a liner replacement for a damper problem unless the camera inspection shows something that genuinely warrants it.

DIY or Call Us?

A homeowner can reasonably check a few things before calling: Is the damper visibly stuck? Does the cable look frayed at the handle? Is there rust scaling on the plate? That’s about where safe DIY ends. The cable runs through the flue, which means working on it requires either getting onto the roof or contorting inside the firebox, and top-sealing damper hardware sits at the crown where a fall is a real risk. More importantly, a damper that doesn’t seal means combustion gases can backdraft into the house when you use the fireplace, and that’s not a problem you want to guess at. If the damper is jammed open or the cable has snapped, call us at (361) 420-8585. We’ll tell you over the phone whether it sounds like a quick cable job or something worth inspecting first, and what it’s likely to cost before we ever schedule the truck.
